Dense fog causes 100-car pileup in Texas

The Thanksgiving holiday got off to a rough start when approximately 100 cars collided on Interstate 10 in southeast Texas. The large accident killed at least two people and several more were injured.

The multi-car accident occurred on Thanksgiving morning and police officers believe that dense fog caused the chain reaction accident. Dense fog is incredibly difficult to drive in and drivers, who don't account for the poor conditions, can find themselves involved in an accident like this.

A semi trailer crashed into an SUV killing the two occupants inside. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, at least 51 people were taken to local hospitals and as of last week, eight are in critical condition and it is uncertain if they will survive.

Investigators on the scene believe the accident started when a car crashed on the eastbound side of the freeway, causing a chain reaction accident in both directions on the highway. Interstate 10 was closed until late Thursday evening as officials worked to clear the wreckage. According to a deputy on the scene, "The foremost thing in this holiday season is how other travelers were helping us when we were overwhelmed, sitting and holding, putting pressure on people that were injured."

This was an unusual accident, but drivers should consider the weather conditions and the speed at which they are driving, especially on freeways. In this instance, the fog was so thick and drivers probably didn't expect other cars to slow down for the foggy conditions, but some drivers may have had a hard time seeing.
