As a community, we put a lot of faith in others in case we ever need medical or other emergency assistance. The majority of us don't know how to medically assist someone if he suffers a heart attack or is injured in an accident. That feeling of helplessness inspires desperate hope in the abilities of strangers.

Thankfully, there are professionals out there whose job it is to know how to respond to an emergency and keep up safe. Every now and then, however, we hear of a story that makes it more difficult to believe in those we need to trust. A serious car accident in El Paso occurred yesterday. Who was reportedly responsible? An ambulance driver.

According to news reports, the accident occurred yesterday afternoon. It involved the ambulance and one other vehicle that was carrying two unsuspecting women. Sources indicate that the crash was the result of the ambulance driver failing to stop at a red light at the intersection of Montana and Campbell. The driver was not responding to an emergency call.

Images of the collision show that the women's Jeep was turned onto its roof. It's easy to see, therefore, how the women could have suffered severe or even fatal injuries. Fortunately, reports indicate that the crash victims are in stable condition.

It is unsettling when any driver's negligence causes injuries to law-abiding, unsuspecting victims. But when a crash is supposedly caused by someone whose job it is to protect the community, a higher level of concern develops.

It is crucial for a community to be able to rely on the responsibility of Emergency Medical Service workers. If they can't protect our safety, then who can we rely on? This sort of questioning could potentially inspire the victims in this case or cases like this to sue for negligence as a means to get support paying their medical bills and send the message that negligent driving cannot be tolerated.
